www.grainsurfboards.com 802-598-7194 Ask for Mike
Today,09/27/2008,is a dreary, rainy, waiting for TS KYLE waves type of day in York,ME.It is a perfect day to do A DAY IN THE LIFE OF GRAIN SURFBOARDS.The prceeding 20 pictures are representative of a typical day at the factory;with the exception that this is "B-DAY" for the students who have been creating their boards over the past 6 days.Their boards must be ready for glassing by the end of the day.AMY,GARY,RICARDO & RYAN have put their hearts, soul and sweat equity into 4 very beautiful surfboards.I have watched the birthing process since the 22nd,and have been impressed by the newly learned skills, design differences, and outright enthusiasm of all four artisans.Coincidentally, they all decided to build 10'longboards.However,other than the length;the boards are distinctly unique in their visual appearances and reflect the personality of each builder. The quality of their individual work is truly remarkable;particularly considering that none of these folks have ever built a surfboard. One of them has never surfed. The staff at GRAIN is oh so supportive but the work is always the students. What a cool experience!!My hat is off to all of their beautiful boards;a "professional"results for sure.

9/24/2008 Grain Surfboard Factory,York ME
The preceeding few pictures are of various student activities that take place when a person wants to come to Grain to make their own board with assistance from the factory staff. It is a very user friendly working atmosphere.I won't have time to make my own board;but I did order an 8'Bonzer 5 fin.Hopefully it will be done by the time I finish my trip.Enjoyed the day hanging out observing the board building process.Rumor has it that a good swell is on the way for this weekend with Sunday projected as the best day.Prey for SURF!!

Thank You Surfrider Foundation
It was fortuitous to run into Tom Muse and his wife,Nancy Atlas, at breakfast this morning at John's Pancake House,Montauk,NY.Tom is the volunteer director of the Surfrider Foundation(SF) Eastern LI and a friend of Mike's.Tom invited us to attend a walk around the Montauk Lighthouse to hear what the Corp of Engineers wants to do with erosion control at the base of the structure vs the SF position of evaluating moving the lighthouse inland. It was very enjoyable learning opportunity and highlighted the power that volunteers can use to impact bureaucratic decisions.I am hopeful that Tom will be successful in getting a balanced fact-finding for the move vs seawall COE recommendations. The rest of the day was overcast and pretty laidback.Mike heads back to PR tomorrow and I head back to New England and York,ME.
